How To Fish For Trout In A River

Catch-and-Release Practices for Small Fish Fly Fishing

The best chance to catch trout is in the spring, at the very beginning of the season. The right timing can be critical. While the waters are calm in April and May and the fish are less shy, there is intense fishing in the waters in June and this is not the best time to fish. The best days for this are from late April to early May. Trout spawning migration can be used as an advantage. This does not mean that you should try it during the closed season! But the big trout is aggressive after the spawning season and also shortly before surfacing.

Trout tolerates high water temperatures well, but the colder the better, which is one of the reasons why the first weeks of the season are preferred. But even in summer, many streams are very cold. The reason for this is good shading and many groundwater sources. An even temperature balance has a positive effect on the oxygen balance, as do the structural elements in the water. A slow stream without deadwood and stones is unlikely to be a home for large fish.

This fish avoids water bodies where the temperature rises above 20-21 degrees, preferring pure and oxygen-rich waters. It inhabits both relatively cold streams and rivers of mountainous regions, as well as in lowland water bodies. Firstly, where there is little feed, the weight of trout rarely exceeds 0.5 kilograms, and secondly, where conditions are more favorable, it grows to 1 – 1.5 kilograms, sometimes even up to 5 kilograms.

The choice of a fishing spot is the most important step in determining the entire fishing strategy. The fishing season for trout, a fish that spawns in the fall, usually begins with the opening of rivers. Where water bodies do not freeze in warm winters, they can be caught in winter, if it is not prohibited by the rules of fishing, although it behaves rather passively at this time.

Some burst of activity is observed when the first meltwater enters the river. The ground had not yet thawed out at this time, so the water in the river remains quite transparent. However, one should not expect great success at this time.

Trout Fishing Tackle

In early spring, trout can be found in the so-called winter places – pits, eddies below the rifts, in a moderate current, that is, where there is food – caddis larvae, frogs, small fish. When the water level begins to rise and it becomes cloudy, it is very difficult to determine the locations of trout.

Almost any float rod is suitable for trout fishing. The longer the rod, the better, since it allows you to throw the bait further, and the angler does not come close to the water and thus unmask himself. The rod should be light enough with a stiff tip and running rigging. Any simple reel with a small drum capacity is suitable.

The most common bait should be recognized as a dung worm or scapula, and the redder they are, the better. Small and medium trout do not pay much attention to the quality of the worm. For a large trout, a whole and the mobile worm is needed. The worm is planted in any way, but so that the sting of the hook is closed.

If there are no worms, you can use insect larvae, small pieces of fresh fish, or the guts (intestines, for example) of the same trout. In summer, when fishing with a float, large insects are considered a good bait, and closer to winter for solid trout – and fry.

Various Subspecies of Rainbow Trout

The method of catching trout with a float is characterized by the fact that the float, together with the bait, is floated downstream to the length of the fishing line and rod, while the bait is at the bottom and can touch its irregularities. For the bait to move in front of the float, it is periodically held back a little. The angler releases the bait at the distance of the float’s visibility and returns it to its original position, reeling in the line with a reel (or lifting the end of the rod with a dull rig). Float fishing is used in places where rivers and streams flow into lakes, on a slow current of quiet reaches and channels between lakes. If conditions permit, the angler can follow the float along the shore, keeping away from the water.

This method is especially successful when fishing in the mouths of rivers and streams at dusk when the angler can take an advantageous position without the risk of being noticed by the fish. In this case, the float should be white for better visibility.

They also have some key habitat requirements that remain constant. They love to dwell in stone piles, in fallen trees in the water. They also prefer to go deep into the water when not spawning. Deepwater maintains a more stable temperature than shallow water, which in turn means more stable living conditions. Crappie fishing is possible with ultra-light spinning rods. Lobster fishing usually takes place on small rocky plateaus located relatively shallow underwater. This is what amateurs usually do. Professionals can fish lobsters even in the open sea at a depth of hundreds of meters. There are two main designs for catching crustaceans.

The first is soft traps, which have a wooden case and are covered with strong nylon nets.

The second design is rigid traps, which have a metal frame and are also covered with a nylon mesh.

The bait can be different. You can use special food, as well as meat from a variety of marine life. Fish, fresh and not so, pieces of crabs and their congeners, all this is well suited for bait. After the lobsters, attracted by the taste of the meat, crawl into the trap, it rises to the surface, and the catch is folded into special mesh bags. Fishing for striped bass can be carried out using such baits as sea worms, eels, shellfish, mackerel, and others. The choice of the rod depends on the type of fishing you are going to do. Factors such as freshwater, saltwater, from a boat, sitting on a pier, jetty, or pier, the type of bait, or if you are using bait. All of these factors influence your decision. How to catch fish in a river?

I distinguish three ways to fish in the river. I think they are the most effective. As a beginner, you need to try each one to determine which one works best for you. So:

  • Spinning
  • Float
  • Fly fishing

Each fishing method is fundamentally different from the others and makes it unique. To perfectly master one of them, you need to spend more than one year. But do not give up right away – to catch pike, bream, or catfish it is not necessary to become a professional, it is enough to know the basic principles, and the rest of the experience will come already in the process, directly on fishing.

How to catch fish in a lake?

Fishing methods on the lake can be very diverse. Among the most common, fishing is distinguished using a spinning rod, float, or bottom fishing rod. The most important thing is to find a catchy place. Most often, fish can be found in the depths of vegetation, which is located in the vicinity of the lake, channels, estuaries, as well as in places of narrowing of the reservoir. Pike perch and bream are most likely to be found in deep pits. Experienced fishermen have found that if the water temperature of the lake is low, then the fish is in shallow areas, and if the water temperature rises, the fish sinks to the bottom, since it is here that the water is much cooler during such periods.

The length of the rod for fishing in the lake should be consistent with the water level in the area where you are going to fish. There are no special criteria when choosing a float. Here you can completely rely on your taste. Also, it is very important to choose the right fishing line, because if this is fishing in the thickets, then you will need a denser and, accordingly, strong fishing line, since not strong enough material can simply break.

How to catch fish in the ocean?

If you want to try fishing in the ocean, then I advise you to try trolling. Trolling is a type of fishing. Fishing is carried out from a moving boat or boat on a spinning rod with a lure, wobbler, or other bait. Trolling can be done both in freshwater bodies of water (rivers and lakes) and in the sea and ocean. Trolling is used to catch almost all types of predatory fish.

You should understand that trolling has several features, without knowing which you cannot count on serious success. Firstly, this is because fishing is often carried out at great depths and requires special tackle. Secondly, various types of bait (both artificial and natural) are used as bait, each of which requires a special technique. Thirdly, such fishing requires a certain experience in driving a watercraft and knowledge of the features of the reservoir (currents, bottom topography, depths, etc.).

How to deep sea fish?

Deep-sea fishing is a type of fishing in which people hunt for large, open sea fish species. These fish include tuna, sharks, and others. Catching large sea fish is quite challenging. You must have certain skills, this kind of fishing can generate a lot of positive emotions.

Deep-sea fishing is done with larger boats, sometimes equipped with trolling outriggers, electric bottom fishing reels, and a variety of rods. Deep-sea fishing reels are usually much larger than those used for river fishing, as saltwater fish are not only larger but also stronger and faster.
