I recently got my hands on the Aquarobotman Nemo Underwater Drone with a 4K UHD Camera and LED Fill Light, and I have to say, it’s pretty impressive! Here are my thoughts on the product:

As an avid underwater drone enthusiast, I’m always looking for ways to explore deeper depths and capture stunning footage. Right now, I’m using a tethered drone that allows me to go as deep as 126ft, but I’m considering investing in a longer cord that would enable me to reach 300ft.

While I’m excited about the possibilities of exploring deeper waters, I do have some concerns about the safety of sending my drone so far out. I worry about the risk of the tether wrapping around something and potentially damaging the drone.

Most of the footage I’ve captured so far has been in shallower waters, ranging from 5 to 30ft. However, I’m looking forward to checking out some shipwrecks this summer and seeing what kind of footage I can capture.

I started with a cheaper drone that cost around $400 to $500 but eventually upgraded to a more expensive one for around $1400. I’m looking for ways to explore the depths and capture amazing footage. Recently, I’ve been launching my drone from the shore, but now that the boat launches are free of ice, I’m excited to navigate from my boat.

One of the features I love about my drone is the controller, which has nautical bearings and displays the orientation of the drone in the water column with precision. If I ever lose track of where I’m heading, I can simply resurface and continue on my way.

Another advantage of using a tethered drone is the added security it provides. During one of my trips, I maxed out the battery and the drone stopped responding to my controller. Thankfully, I was able to pull it in with the tether. This is something I couldn’t do with an air drone, and it gives me peace of mind while exploring the depths.

I’m actually located in the US, but I do love exploring the waters of Canada and Minnesota. With my underwater drone, I’m able to dive down to a maximum of 330 ft or 100m. The drone is equipped with bright LED lights, which allow me to operate in the dark and capture stunning footage.

However, I have noticed that the fish aren’t always the biggest fans of drones. They tend to scatter when it first approaches, but I’m still able to capture some incredible footage. I’m glad to hear that you’re enjoying our conversation! To answer your question, the cord for my underwater drone is actually 330 ft long. I know it might seem cumbersome, but I find it to be useful in case the battery runs out or I lose connection. The cord allows me to recover the drone easily and safely.

As for some of the locations I’ve explored, one of my favorites is a huge reef called Reef Point, located near where I live. During the spawning season, there are lake trout all over the reef, which is always exciting to see. 

I never thought to explore the area during the fall, but I think it could yield some interesting footage as well. I’m also looking forward to filming pre-spawn king salmon in open water during the fall season, as long as the water conditions cooperate. 

There’s always something new to discover and explore beneath the surface, and I can’t wait to see where my underwater drone will take me next.

I agree, the lake I explore with my underwater drone is incredibly clean and full of different game fish species. The drone I use is the M2 by Chasing, and it has a fantastic camera. 

One of the things I love about this drone is the automatic features that allow it to adjust to color and light, resulting in high-quality footage. It’s amazing to see the different fish species suspended all over the structures and surrounding areas, and even rolling up on the drone itself. 

The underwater world is truly fascinating, and I feel lucky to have the technology to explore it in such detail.

Thank you for sharing this information. It’s interesting to hear that Lake Geneva in SE WI is where you filmed the footage. However, if the waters are clear on Torch Lake, it could also be a great location to capture some amazing footage. 

I’ve noticed that smallmouth bass are often the most curious fish I encounter, but brown trout are also quite curious. They tend to surround the drone and exchange curious glances.

I’ve been considering purchasing a drone for fishing, and I’ve noticed that some drones are sold without cameras and are primarily used for dropping baits 500-1000 meters out to sea, while others have cameras that can be used to search for schools of fish and drop baits in their vicinity.

I spoke with a developer of one such fishing system, and they explained that removing the camera from the drone fishing package helps to reduce the cost and complexity of the system, which makes sense given that it could add over $1000 to the overall package.

My question is for those who have experience with drone fishing, both with and without a camera: How useful is real-time video footage for drone fishing? Is it worth the extra cost and complexity? As someone who has looked into underwater drones, I want to caution others about the limitations that come with them. While flying drones have become increasingly popular and have proven to be quite versatile, the same cannot be said for underwater drones.

First and foremost, water is a very different medium than air, which means that signals to the controller cannot penetrate it the same way it can in the air. That is why most underwater drones have tethers either to the controller or a floating receiver that stays on the surface. There are a few tether-free drones, but they tend to have a limited range, making it difficult to get the kind of footage that you would expect.

Water currents are also much stronger than air currents, making it challenging to stabilize an underwater drone and prevent it from being swept away. Even the Dory model, which has a tether going to a floating device, can be dangerous if the tides and currents are too strong. The tethers can also get tangled in things, which means you may have to jump in to retrieve the drone or risk losing it.

Moreover, water is not as visually friendly as air, which means that the quality of the footage you get is often subpar. Unless you are in the clearest of waters, the view distance will be limited, and stabilizing the drone and camera is a lot more difficult. Silt and dirt will also make the water hard to see through, and the drone can kick up debris, ruining the footage.

I have looked at many underwater drone commercials, and I noticed that they spend more time showing you the drone, bikini-clad women on the beach, or people using VR glasses. The footage supposedly from the drone is minimal, and some of it is questionable as to whether it came from the drone or just one of the cameras used to film it. Some commercials even have fake footage, such as the same fish swimming lit by different light sources to make it seem like the drone is better than it actually is.

When independent reviewers put up their videos using the same drones, the footage doesn’t look nearly as good, possibly due to the limitations I mentioned above, but also because the footage in the commercials may not have come from the drones at all.

In conclusion, while I find the possibilities of underwater drones intriguing, they are not as good or usable as aerial drones, and the footage they produce is not as high quality as you would expect. I urge people to be careful when purchasing underwater drones and to pay attention to the suspicious footage in commercials.

I’ve had a friend who tried treasure hunting with a submarine, and one of the biggest challenges he faced was keeping track of the orientation of the device relative to himself once it was out of his field of view. It was difficult to know whether it was moving left, right, farther away, or closer once he pressed forward on the controller.

I was thinking that having a compass or some kind of direction indicator on the screen like a video game minimap could be really useful in this situation. I know it would be a major undertaking to implement, but I believe it would significantly improve the usability of the device. It would be great to have an on-screen indicator showing the direction the submarine is facing underwater.

I also found out that his submarine had a claw that could reach things, which I thought was pretty cool. I’m not sure how difficult it would be to add that feature, but it seems like a really useful add-on for treasure hunting or any kind of underwater exploration.

As someone who frequently uses drones while out on the water, I can attest to the importance of having a drone that is easy to launch and retrieve by hand. Trying to take off or land on a deck that is rolling in ocean waves is simply not feasible.

Additionally, it’s important to recognize that flying a drone over water comes with a higher risk than flying over land. A hard landing that might be survivable on shore could mean the total loss of your drone if it happens at sea.
