I’ve been keeping an eye on the Quantum Energy PT for a while now and I was happy to see that Tackle Tour gave it a “Great” rating. I currently have the 2006 Quantum Energy PT and it has been a workhorse for me, but I do have to admit it’s pretty big. I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about the Acurist and I’m thinking of giving it a try.
It had been a while since I last purchased a reel, but last year I decided to pick up a few Curado K’s, an SLX, a bunch of Daiwa Tatula models, and another Lew’s. I try not to fall for the hype and instead focus on selecting gear that best fits the techniques I’m fishing.
In my personal experience, I have found that Quantum reels are decent but don’t last as long as some other brands. However, I have never had one completely fail me either. I used a Quantum reel extensively last summer for freshwater fishing and it performed well. Unfortunately, it did not hold up when I took it out for saltwater fishing, and ended up dying on me.
I recently tried out the 06 Quantum Energy PT reel, which boasts a 6.3:1 gear ratio and can hold 12lbs/125yds. While it may have some bulk, it’s a surprisingly quiet caster with a smooth and powerful retrieve. Although it may not be the strongest caster out there, it can still hold its own. One thing I noticed was its significant wrenching power. The finish is also worth mentioning as it changes color from green to blue to purple depending on the angle of reflection.
I paired the reel with a Mojo Bass Jig & Worm rod, although I think it would be better suited for a spinner bait rod. I spooled the reel with a 20lb fluorocarbon line and used a 4.5″ Yamamoto Heattail Shad on a VMC 3/8ths Boxer Jig as my lure. Overall, I had a positive experience with this reel and would recommend it to others looking for a reliable option.
In my experience, Quantum has been hit or miss with their reels. However, I do believe that they have some models that are truly excellent. The original Smoke and the 06 Quantum Energy PT that the OP posted about are definitely the cream of the crop for Quantum.
For me, Smoke was on par with reels like the Daiwa Tatula and Curado E series. It was incredibly tough and well-built. While there may be better competition in recent years, the older models like the Smoke and the Energy PT are definitely deserving of some recognition and praise.
I’ve been using a Quantum EXO PPT 100 since 2013 and it has been fantastic. I must admit, it was quite expensive at around $200 when I bought it. I know that some people have had problems with Quantum reels, but both of the ones I’ve owned have been top-notch. In fact, I’m currently selling my EXO if anyone is interested!
I did have a mishap on a boat where I lost the side cap, but I sent it to Quantum and they had it replaced in just one week. Although Shimano is my preferred choice, I can definitely vouch for Quantum reels being good to go.
I own the Bill Dance edition Quantum combo in a 6’6″ medium-heavy, and I have mixed feelings about it. On the positive side, the price point is quite attractive, and the rod feels durable. In fact, I recently caught my personal best, a 3.5 lb largemouth, on a chatter bait, and the rod handled it with ease.
The reel also casts well, but I struggle with adjusting the brakes and tension to avoid backlashes, especially when switching baits. Therefore, I’ve limited its use to chatter baits and finesse jigs, where I don’t need to make many adjustments. Additionally, I don’t think the reel is built very solidly, as I can feel the difference compared to my aluminum frame baitcasting reel on a different rod.
Despite this, I haven’t encountered any maintenance or parts problems yet, as I’ve been using it for almost two years now. Overall, I think the Bill Dance Quantum combo is a decent choice, especially if you’re looking for an affordable option for specific techniques.
I have the 5’6″ medium light spinning combo from Quantum and I must say it’s a great value for the price. I mainly use it for bank fishing in freshwater streams and it has held up well for the past two years. I have been considering getting the bait caster version as well, but the reviews have been inconsistent.
However, based on my positive experience with the spinning combo, I think it’s worth giving the baitcaster a shot, especially for its reasonable price of $70. Overall, I believe the Quantum combo is a good option for those looking for a budget-friendly fishing setup.
