I have personally used the BG 6500 and it has a significantly larger line capacity, with around 180 more yards of 65, and more line pick up at 48.7” per turn, compared to the Shimano Saragosa 10k which has a line capacity of 390 yards of 65 and 40” per turn line pick up. Both reels also have a maximum drag of 33 lbs.

It’s a common misconception that all sharks are massive and require heavy-duty equipment to even stand a chance. In reality, good size eaters can be compared to bull reds and can be caught on 5 K-sized reels with the proper tackle.
Of course, if you’re specifically targeting larger sharks, then you may need to step up your gear to match. But if your target is in the 4-6′ range, then 6-8k sized spinning reels should work perfectly fine.
It’s important to remember that gear should always match the intended target species and conditions. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking bigger is always better, as it may just lead to unnecessary expense and discomfort on the water.
I’ve found that both the 8000 and 6500 reels are great options, but I personally prefer the 6500 as it feels like a more appropriate size for my needs. That being said, both reels have worked well for me in the past. The only reason I stopped using my 8000 was that after three years of hard use, the click became quiet and it was getting worn down. If you are on a budget, I recommend considering a Penn Jigmaster with 65 lb braid for a conventional reel option. For spinning reels, the Daiwa BG 8000 or Penn Fierce are more affordable options.
In terms of rods, I suggest looking at the 12′ Penn Squadron or Daiwa FT. These may be slightly heavier than more expensive options but they are perfect for surf fishing where casting isn’t done as frequently.
Lastly, make sure to have at least 300 yards of line on your reel to be prepared for any unexpected encounters with big fish.
I can confidently say that I have had better success casting with conventional reels over spinning reels, especially when the conditions are ideal. I have caught several sharks from shore, ranging from 6ft and under, and I have never felt the need to use a kayak to go further out to sea. However, I must emphasize that I am not targeting these larger sharks, and would prefer not to catch them.
If you prefer spinning reels, I would recommend choosing one with a capacity of at least 200 yards of your desired line test, such as 50# mono or above. Your choice of the line depends on your preferred style, whether it’s brute force or finesse. While the higher the test line, the less capacity and cast ability you have, you can lock the drag more tightly as there is less chance of breakage. Of course, there are other factors to consider when choosing your line, but I won’t delve into them in this comment.
For your rod, I suggest using one with a lure rating of 8oz or more, and a length of around 11-12ft. Personally, I stick to reels and poles that are $100 or less and have had great success with them.
When it comes to fishing reels, I don’t have any particular brand loyalty. However, I have found myself gravitating toward Daiwa’s offerings. The 6:1 gear ratio on their reels is a big selling point for me, as well as what I believe to be a superior internal design. Specifically, I own the Sealine X SHA 50 and the Sealine SWL50.
The Sealine X is a great casting reel and I’ve seen other fishermen easily empty it at outings. Keep in mind that finding a new one for under $100 might be tough these days, as they usually run closer to $130. As for the SWL50, it’s a solid reel but doesn’t quite match the performance of the Sealine X out of the box. Additionally, the clicker side features a bushing instead of bearings, which might be a downside for some anglers.
In my opinion, the Avet TRX is the best reel for big sharks. Specifically, the TRX 80 2-speed with a quad would be an excellent choice. To complete the setup, I suggest getting in touch to find the right rod. I have some videos of my catches, but I prefer not to share them here.

My fishing buddy and I have been using Penn Battle 8000 and Cabo 80 respectively for our big shark fishing. The Penn Battle 8000 is a relatively cheap option, coming in at under $100, and my buddy has landed a 7-foot sandbar shark on it without any issues. On the other hand, the Cabo 80 is more expensive, but I find it to be on par with the Penn Battle in terms of performance.
I personally use Penn Battles on both my surf rods and king rods, and I really love the reel. It’s designed for straight braid, has a huge line capacity (for a spin reel), and maintains the quality Penn is known for. I’ve tried a couple of other Penn reels on my buddy’s surf rods, but they don’t quite match up to the Battle in my opinion.

In the surf, strong currents can cause sharks to run sideways and peel off a lot of lines. This is why having a larger reel with more line capacity is important. When you set your bait at low tide, it’s best to place it right past the breakers and let out an additional line as the tide comes in to keep the bait in place. In my personal experience, the 6500 bg reel has been fantastic for catching sharks. I use it on an 11′ Battalion 2 rod and have successfully reeled in several sharks ranging from 4-6ft in size. My latest catch was a heavy 5’6″ bull shark. Compared to my Penn Fierce 6000, the Diawa BG reel is noticeably bigger and has a much larger line capacity. On the reels I presented, I fished from the shore in Tenerife small sharks, which are mostly still without teeth and not more than one meter long. The fight with them was fascinating.
