I personally own the 52 qt version of the Igloo MaxCold Cooler and it has been great for my needs. I typically go camping for 2-3 days at a time, so I don’t need a Yeti cooler that can keep ice for a week or more. If I’m camping for a longer period, I just restock with ice and drinks.
I make sure to pre-chill the cooler the day before and usually fill it half with drinks and half with food. I’ve found that it can keep roughly 10-15 pounds of ice for 2-3 days, depending on the outside temperature. For the footprint, it has good storage space – I can easily store around 24 cans, 3 growlers, and food for two people for 3 days (breakfast and dinner).
Sure, a Yeti cooler would be better, but it’s also 2.5 times the cost, and I don’t think the storage-to-footprint ratio is as good. If you’re camping for 3 or more days and won’t be going into town to restock, then a Yeti cooler might be a better option. But if you don’t need to keep food fresh for more than a few days, then the Igloo MaxCold cooler is just as good as a Yeti, in my opinion.
As someone who is in the market for a new cooler, I’m considering getting the Igloo MaxCold IMX 70 and 24. I’ve always been a fan of Igloo products and these coolers seem to have good reviews.
I do have to admit that the price tag is a bit steep for what I would normally pay for a cooler, but if the IMX 70 can hold ice for 5 days, then I think it would be worth the investment. After all, having a cooler that can keep my food and drinks cold for that long would be a game-changer for my camping trips and outdoor adventures.
So far, I haven’t had any issues with the Igloo MaxCold IMX 70 cooler. It seems to be very well-made, and I’ve only used it for one long camping trip and a few day trips since I got it during last winter’s Black Friday sale. My husband has even used it to keep a brisket warm a few times, and it worked perfectly.
In comparison to my smaller Yeti cooler (which I traded something for and would never pay full retail price for), I wouldn’t say that the Yeti is exceptionally higher quality. We mainly use the Yeti for drinks, so it gets opened more frequently, but overall, I’m really impressed with the Igloo MaxCold IMX 70 and think it’s a great investment for anyone who loves the outdoors.
My family recently bought the Igloo BMX cooler in 25qt for $99. We’ve had a pair of 25qt Igloo 3-Day Coolers since the late 90s, and we thought that there must have been some improvements in cooler technology after 20 years. However, we found that they were just about the same in terms of performance. We loaded all of them with the same 7 pounds of ice, filling them about 1/3 full, and they all lasted for approximately 3 days.
In comparison to a Coleman cooler, we believe that the Igloo coolers will perform better. One important tip we learned is to make sure to chill the cooler and its contents before loading it up. This ensures that the cooler can maintain its temperature for a longer period of time. All in all, we’re satisfied with our purchase of the Igloo BMX cooler and believe that it’s a solid option for anyone in the market for a new cooler.
I purchased the Igloo BMX 52 cooler around 2 summers ago and I can confidently say that I haven’t been disappointed with it. While Yeti coolers may have a great reputation for ice retention, I believe that you’re mostly paying for the brand name. My Igloo BMX 52 held ice just as long as my friend’s Yeti cooler which was around the same size.
Overall, it’s an excellent cooler that has exceeded my expectations. During a winter cross-country drive, it held ice in the bed of my truck for close to a week while still keeping all my supplies cold. Of course, it was winter, but it still worked great. If you’re looking for a cooler that’s both affordable and effective, the Igloo BMX 52 is definitely worth considering.
If you’re looking for a high-quality cooler, I highly recommend the Igloo Marine Ultra, no matter what size you need. One of the key features that sets it apart from other coolers is that it has stainless steel hinges and clasps, as well as a braided cable hold-open instead of plastic parts.
Personally, I own the 110 Glide version which comes with wheels and an adjustable tow bar. I bought it for $120 at Academy and have been thoroughly impressed with its performance. During a 4-day camping trip, it still had ice in it and could have easily lasted for 2 more days.
I think the Igloo Marine Ultra is an excellent investment for anyone in need of a reliable and durable cooler.
If you’re not looking to impress anyone and just need to keep your food cold, I have a few tips that might help. I use foam-lined cardboard boxes that are commonly used to ship seafood. They can be found for free or for around $20 at stores like Walmart or Sportsman’s Warehouse. They might not last forever, but they’ll do the job for car camping trips.
If you need something that will keep your food cold for many days, try finding a place that sells dry ice and ask for the containers it arrives in. These containers are made of thick layers of rigid foam inside a cardboard box with an IR-reflective layer. I’ve been given these for free when I’ve asked for them, and I often cut down the foam from one box and add it as a second layer to another box for double the insulation.
Here’s my secret weapon for keeping food cold: Fill pop bottles with water and freeze them. They’re leak-proof and can provide many pounds of ice to keep your food cold, and the melted water can be used for drinking.
For an even better solution, make a 20-30% brine solution and freeze it in soda bottles. This concentrated brine solution will melt at 10-15F before your ice cream does, so it can keep frozen items frozen for several days.
When packing your cooler, fill it in reverse order with the last items to be used going in first. Make a plan and a list, and only open the cooler once or twice a day to quickly remove items for each meal. Keep the cooler out of the sun and add a sleeping bag over it for extra insulation. These tips should help keep your food cold for longer periods of time.
Last year, I scored a great deal on the Igloo BMX 52 Qt Cooler (grey & blue) at my local Safeway grocery store for just $50!
To increase its insulation, I added a cut-to-fit sheet of reflective insulation foil along with a thin sheet of styrofoam inside the cooler. These two pieces of insulation sit on top of the drinks & ice. I also put a small refrigerator thermometer inside the cooler to monitor the temperature.
Results were impressive: the ice lasted for 4-5 days. Even after all the ice had melted, water temps were measuring 40 degrees for one day. I haven’t tested it further out than one day of 100% melted ice/water, but I’m confident it would still perform well.
There’s a debate among cooler enthusiasts about whether it’s better to keep items submerged in the water or to drain the liquid from the cooler. Personally, I believe the melting ice water is beneficial in prolonging lower cooler temps.
After doing some research, I found that the Igloo IMX coolers are noticeably heavier than the BMX coolers for the same storage volume. For example, the 25qt BMX weighs 10.34lbs, while the 24qt IMX weighs 16.01lbs, despite being only 1qt smaller. It seems like the IMX is built to handle more abuse and has thicker walls, which likely contributes to better ice retention.
I believe that the IMX line is intended to compete with other popular rotomolded cooler brands, such as Yeti, while the BMX is more of a standard Igloo cooler with a rugged design. It’s essential to consider your specific needs before deciding which cooler to purchase.
