Basic Tips for Choosing Holders

convenient fishing from the shore

I want to give you a couple of tips for choosing fishing rod holders. These few points will help you not to be mistaken and not to waste money. Pay attention to these points when choosing a model.

The Design

The design of the holder for the fishing rod should be thought out to the smallest detail and there should be nothing superfluous in it. The holder should be easy to use. If it is important for you that the holder can hold more than one fishing rod, then look for just such a model.

The Material

Holders for fishing rods are most often made of stainless steel and plastic. They can also be made of aluminum. Each material has its advantages. Stainless steel and aluminum are reliable and durable materials. They are great for use in freshwater or saltwater. They resist rust and corrosion. But such materials are quite heavy. If you are an experienced fisherman, then such materials are what you need. Plastic is also an excellent material, it is lighter than the two previous ones. If you have a small budget for a fishing rod holder, then choose plastic. It is cheaper, but not as reliable as aluminum or stainless steel. Your choice depends on your preferences and budget.

Mounting Options

You can choose rod clamp holders or mounting options. You can attach the clamps to the boat or the siding pier. But they are not as durable as mounts. However, they are quite budgetary and you can always take them with you. Mounts are more expensive, but their quality deserves special attention. If you are aiming for a big catch, it is better to choose mounts.

Number of Adjustments

If your fishing rod holder can’t hold the fishing rod in different positions, then this is a bad accessory. An excellent holder can hold the fishing rod in different positions so that you can avoid various difficulties during fishing. An ideal option is a holder that can be adjusted 360 degrees. Look for a holder that can be both vertically and horizontally. A good plus is the presence of various settings.

The type of fishing rod holder you choose depends on what you’re fishing for and the conditions you’ll be fishing in. For example, if you’re fishing in an area with low wind and using heavier rig weights, a high-angle holder may work best.

On the other hand, if you’re fishing in a windy area or using lighter rig weights, a more horizontal holder may be a better choice. It’s important to consider these factors when selecting a fishing rod holder to ensure the best possible fishing experience.

I prefer to set my drag just enough to support the weight of my rig. I tend to do most of my fishing around the margins with light rigs, such as waggle floats or max 20g ledgers, so my drag is typically fairly loose. I find that my hooks set fine with a sideways strike, but this approach may not be suitable for all types of fishing.

I have heard that having a soft drag can be problematic in certain situations, such as when fishing at a further distance with more stretch in your line or when a fish has more room to escape to a snag. However, I tend to use braid for my mainline and fish at most 10m out. I also strike to the side and away from any snags I’ve identified, which I find tends to turn the fish and make them more amendable to changing direction than depth.

If you do choose to have a soft drag, it’s important to be mindful of how quickly you tighten it once you’re playing a fish, as snapping it on too hard can result in the jerk breaking your leader. Ultimately, as with most things in fishing, it’s about doing what works for you and understanding the pros and cons of certain choices.

Personally, I recommend going for a PVC pipe with a spike as a cheap and effective way to make your own fishing rod holder. You can easily find the materials at Walmart or any hardware store.

All you need is a PVC pipe, an angle iron, and zip ties. Cut the angle iron at an angle and pound it into the ground. Cut the PVC pipe to a length that will hold your rod securely and then zip-tie it to the angle iron. It’s best to keep the parts separate to make it easier to beat the iron into the ground, and then attach the PVC after putting it into the ground.

Using this method, fish won’t be able to pull your rod into the water, ensuring that your gear stays safe. However, be careful not to go overboard when pounding the angle iron into the ground, as it can make it very difficult to remove later on.

I’ve found that PVC pipe is a great, simple material to use for making rod holders. If I’m fishing on sandy or dirt terrain, I attach the PVC to a 4-5 foot metal or fence post.

If the ground is too hard, I use a rubber mallet to stick the PVC into the ground or I attach it to a cooler filled with ice and other necessities. Another option is to use elastic hooks to attach the cooler to the railing.

For a universal and cost-free solution, I recommend loosening the drag. A common reason for a strong fish pulling the pole is because the drag is too tight, not allowing any “give” on the line.

Loosen the drag enough so that the line gives with a firm tug, but not so much that it moves freely with no pressure unless you’re fishing for a big catch. Adjust the drag as needed while fighting the fish.

The key to successful fishing is not just having the right equipment but also knowing how to use it effectively. When it comes to rod holders, there are plenty of options available but one mistake I avoid is having my drag too tight. It’s important to leave enough slack in the drag so that the fish can pull on the line without dragging your entire rod into the water.

I also recommend paying attention to the sounds your equipment makes. When the drag is set correctly, it should produce a distinct sound that alerts you when you have a bite. Alternatively, you can invest in a bell for the tip of your rod that also alerts you to a bite. By leaving the drag loose enough to give you time to react and grab the rod, you can improve your chances of successfully catching a fish.

I personally use the YackAttack Omega rod holder and I’m a big fan of it. One of the things I love about it is how easily it disconnects from the rail mount, making it a breeze to switch between setups.

Another great feature is that you can adjust the direction it’s facing while you’re out on the water. Plus, it works well with both spinning and baitcasting reels, making it a versatile option for any angler.

I’ve found the Stealth QR1 rod holders with extensions to be a great addition to my fishing gear. I use them on my kayak with the 2-point rail mounts and on my jon boat with the standard mounts screwed down to the wooden benches. The holders are easy to use and have held up well in a variety of fishing conditions. Overall, I highly recommend them to fellow anglers.

I’ve been using the Scotty Powerlock rod holders for my fishing needs and they’ve been working great. I have two of them mounted on my Hobie Outback kayak for trolling striped bass. I’ve also added risers to elevate them above my legs while pedaling, which has made using them even more convenient.

I’ve found a simple and effective way to hold my fishing rod while sitting in a canoe. I just put the butt of the rod under one knee and hold the rest of the rod in front of my leg with the reel between my knees. It’s like having an instant rod holder and I’ve caught a lot of fish using this method. It works great for cruising along shorelines, drop-offs, reefs, and humps.

Although a clamp-on holder can be nice to keep the rod away from the paddle, this method doesn’t require any gear and I’ve never had a fish, rock, or log pull the rod loose. I call it the BW troll.

I’ve been doing it this way for years, but every year I consider getting a holder to free up some space while paddling. It’s not a necessity, but it would be nice to have. Another member of my party has one, but they don’t make it anymore.
